0066-1Can you believe it’s May? I sure can’t. This year started off like one of those years that just wants to break you. You know what I mean, right? I entered January feeling like I needed to build some physical and emotional muscle if I was planning on surviving the year.

That said, I entered 2014 determined to stand strong and reach my goals, and that is what I am doing. I refuse to let circumstances break me. That mess is for the birds. It’s been a struggle, but with every passing day I feel confident that I am making the right choices and I am on my way!  I love it!

One goal that I am thrilled to say I am slowly reaching is my fitness/weight loss goal. I am down about 15 pounds since December and I now workout 4-5 times a week. Fitting those workouts in is HARD for sure, but I have made the decision that they are not optional. No matter how tired I am, I always eat and I always find time to shower and brush my teeth. Well, the same should go for my health. Being overweight, stressed and tired is not serving me or my family. I had to put an end to that mess.

So now I am making plans to stay fit year round, and I am living in that place where most of my pants are now too big for me (oh, so sweet). I have signed up for a few races in the coming months because I know that will keep me on track.  The race I am most excited about, though, is the SHAPE Diva Dash, a 5-k obstacle course sponsored by SHAPE magazine.

dallas3The Diva Dash promises to be a blast and I am so excited because a number of girlfriends are participating in the race with me. I know when you hear obstacle course you might think, “oh hell no,” but I promise there is no barbed wire and no fire pits. It’s just good ol’ fun that will leave you feeling strong, fit and fabulous.

The best thing about the last few months has been my ability to enjoy working out, like I once did.  It doesn’t feel like a chore, but rather it feels like something I look forward to because I am just so proud of myself when I am done.

I know you are busy. We all are. I also know that doing an obstacle course may seem intimidating, especially if you don’t work out. But please don’t let fear get in your way. If I can do this, I know you can. And it’s really not just about losing weight or getting fit. It’s deeper than that. It’s about getting “unstuck.” It’s about knowing your strength. It’s about reminding yourself that you can do anything.

I will be participating in the SHAPE Diva Dash on August 16th in the Washington, DC area.  If you want to join in on the fun, click here to sign up.  Use code AXMARTINE and you will receive $10 off of registration. Also, if you plan to do the race in  Philadelphia on September 13th or New York on October 11th, the AXMARTINE code will work for those races as well.

Call some of your girls, form a team, and have a blast. I know I will and, yes, I will be wearing a hot pink tutu!
