Father’s Day is a just around the corner, and I can’t wait. As a child, this wasn’t the case. Father’s Day was actually another day for me to celebrate my mother and all the wonderful things she did for us. Looking back, I wonder if that made her feel loved or if it made her sad that we weren’t showering our dad with love instead.
Because of my experiences as a child, I grew up wanting to give my kids what I didn’t have. I’ve been blessed with the ability to do just that. I’ve been married for almost 8 years to a man I have known for over 20 years. We met as freshmen at Syracuse University and developed the an incredible friendship. At the time, I never thought he was “the one,” but it turns out that he was. After getting married at a beautiful church in Long Island, NY we went on to start our family and now have a home filled with laughter and good times thanks to our two energetic kids.
When I see what they have with their dad, my heart smiles. When I see how much they miss him when’s he’s at work, or how much he makes them laugh, it makes me wonder what it would have been like to have a dad like that as a child. I knew my dad and he was around, but not consistently. I couldn’t rely on him for anything. I didn’t trust him with my fears and secrets. I never felt like he was my protector.
And although I think I turned out to be a pretty awesome person thanks to my mom, I know that having a dad who plays an active role in your life makes a difference. Nothing can disrupt the bond my kids have with their dad, My husband is their source of protection, strength, encouragement, support, and laughter. He fills their world up with light in a way that no other man ever will. I love my husband more and more each day because of the father he is to our kids.
Is there a man in your life that you love because of the kind of dad he is? It doesn’t have to be your dad. It can be your husband or an uncle or any other man who has shown you time and time again what it means to be a great father. If someone comes to mind, you have to enter my Hallmark Father’s Day Giveaway.
