Why I Still Believe in Marriage

I will be honest.  I always wanted to get married.  It wasn’t because I felt like being married would complete me because I felt complete prior to my union (I’m a Brooklyn girl who grew up with a good dose of ‘tude and never believed that anyone could complete her).  I wanted to get married because I believed that choosing the right mate would complement me and enhance my life in a meaningful way.  I believed that embarking on this journey called marriage with a person I love and admire would change my life and make me a better person.  I knew that creating a solid partnership with someone shared my values would give me a life that I truly wanted to live.  I was right. I have been married for over five years.  In that time we have experienced our share of rough waters and our share of smooth sailing.  It’s to be expected. Sharing your entire life with another person is no easy feat and nothing in our lives truly prepares us for what that bond means.  Sure, we think we know what we are getting ourselves into, but I don’t think I truly knew.  I figured it out along the way. There are so many negative images and statistics about marriage.  I am not trying to minimize what the stats mean because divorce is a challenging...

What Will I Be Saying on December 31, 2014?

I have had an incredibly challenging first few days of the year. Life has a way of reminding us that despite all of our plans, things just happen and  we can’t control it all.  I have learned, however, that  although I cannot control what the universe throws my way, I can control my reaction to it.  So despite tears and moments of incredible frustration and disappointment, I have realized that I can’t let anyone or anything steal my joy or derail my plans.  I must remain in control of my destiny.  I must remain focused. I had big plans...

What My Hair Taught Me in 2013

2013 was a wonderful yet challenging year. I hit a few rough patches, but I also experienced many blessings to help me put things in perspective.  One of my rough patches (which didn’t seem all that rough after a few more things happened this year) was losing my hair and having to do the big chop again.  I did my first big chop in 2012. A year later my hair was growing in nicely and was very healthy. Then, I made an awful mistake.  I let someone I didn’t trust blow my hair out.  The heat caused so much...

23 Signs That You Are STRESSED OUT

I am an emotional eater.  There is no question about that.  If I am sad, angry, anxious or stressed, I stuff my face.  Ice cream, cookies, cake, french fries. It’s bad.  I have actually been pretty stressed in the past few months, but luckily I have only gained about 7 pounds.  Honestly, I have to thank my kids for that.  Keeping up with them forces me to move and burn a few calories throughout the day. Food isn’t the “go to” for all of us, though. For some it’s smoking or drinking.  While others try to cope with the...

What’s Next for the Sisterhood Project?

Earlier this year, I started something that I hoped would be a movement. It hasn’t been.  However, I can confidently say that it will be. I just need to put more into it.  Movements don’t just happen.  They are nurtured.  Admittedly, I didn’t take the time to nurture my vision.  I let life get in the way. My vision was simple.  Surprise a group of women who matter to me with a small gift that arrived in the mail.  I mailed packages to over 20 women and my only request was this: please forward the gesture to women who matter to them. The women I sent packages to were all touched and expressed such gratitude.  It truly touched my spirit.  Out of over 20 women, there is only one person I never heard from. Frankly, I wasn’t very close to her, so she may have moved in recent years. The thing about something like this is that everyone loves the idea of it, but few women are able to follow through.  And it’s not because they don’t want to (they certainly do), but rather it’s because life happens and they can barely find the time to catch their breath.  I understand, because I have had trouble catching mine this year. But there is some amazing news.  One women I sent a package to is currently in the process of...
